What Makes This Fish Special?

The Whip Fin Fairy Wrasse stands out for its combination of brilliant coloration and distinctive finnage. Mature males can become especially colorful, with their appearance intensifying when displaying to females or other wrasses.

Compared with some of the more peaceful fairy wrasses, the Whip Fin can have a more assertive personality. This makes it an excellent choice for a moderately active reef community, but some planning is recommended when mixing it with other fairy wrasses.

Its small adult size, constant activity, and reef-safe behavior make it an excellent way to add both movement and color to a reef display.

Behavior & Husbandry

Whip Fin Fairy Wrasses are active swimmers that appreciate plenty of open swimming room along with rockwork for shelter.

They are generally compatible with unrelated reef fish but can be territorial toward other fairy wrasses, particularly other males or similarly shaped species. When keeping multiple wrasses, careful selection and adequate space can help reduce aggression.

A secure, tightly fitting aquarium lid is essential, as fairy wrasses are excellent jumpers.

Fairy wrasses retreat into rockwork to sleep and do not require a sand bed for sleeping.

Feeding & Diet

Carnivorous and generally adapts readily to prepared foods.

What We Feed at Lush Corals:

  • Frozen mysis shrimp
  • Enriched brine shrimp
  • High-quality pellets
  • Other appropriately sized frozen foods

In Your Aquarium:

  • Frozen mysis
  • Enriched brine shrimp
  • High-quality pellets
  • Other small meaty marine foods

Multiple smaller feedings throughout the day are beneficial for maintaining good body condition and vibrant coloration.

Compatibility Notes

Compatible with:

  • Clownfish
  • Gobies
  • Blennies
  • Tangs
  • Cardinals
  • Most appropriately sized reef fish
  • Corals and reef invertebrates

Use caution when housing with:

  • Other fairy wrasses
  • Smaller or more timid wrasses
  • Similar-looking males
  • Highly aggressive fish

If keeping several fairy wrasses, the Whip Fin is generally better introduced after more peaceful species have become established.
