What Makes This Fish Special?

The Yellowtail Blue Damsel stands out for its intense blue coloration and sharply contrasting yellow tail. Under reef lighting, the blue can appear almost fluorescent, making this small fish highly visible even in a colorful coral display.

It is also one of the more popular damselfish because it combines the durability and adaptability damsels are known for with a temperament that is generally more manageable than many larger or more aggressive damsel species.

Their small adult size also makes them a great option for adding bold color without requiring a large centerpiece fish.

Behavior & Husbandry

Yellowtail Blue Damsels are active fish that spend much of their time swimming around rockwork while maintaining a preferred territory.

They appreciate caves, crevices, and other hiding areas and may become more territorial as they mature. Although typically less aggressive than many damselfish, established individuals can still defend their area against smaller or similarly sized fish.

Providing plenty of rockwork and visual barriers helps reduce territorial conflicts.
