ABOUT ACROPORA CORAL

Acropora are the crown jewel—and the ultimate challenge—of the SPS coral world. With more species than any other coral genus, Acropora sets the gold standard for serious reef-keeping. When reefers talk about dialing in an SPS system, they’re usually talking about what it takes to keep these beauties thriving.

But make no mistake—Acropora are not for the faint of heart. They’re incredibly sensitive to even minor swings in water chemistry and demand intense lighting, powerful flow, and rock-solid stability. Many experienced aquarists have battled (and lost) with Acropora, but that’s exactly what draws people in.

These corals do best in mature tanks—preferably systems that have been running strong for at least a year.

Lighting Requirements for Acropora Coral

Acropora corals are high-light-demanding SPS corals, and proper lighting is one of the most critical factors for their health, coloration, and growth.

  • PAR Range:
250–450 PAR is the ideal range for most Acropora species.

    • Lower end (250–300 PAR): Suitable for less demanding varieties or for acclimation.

    • Higher end (350–450+ PAR): Preferred by many vibrant, fast-growing species and for color enhancement.

  • Spectrum:

    • Strong blue spectrum (400–500nm) promotes fluorescence and coral health.

    • A balanced mix of blue and white light is ideal, often with a ratio of about 70% blue to 30% white in reef LED setups.

  • Photoperiod:

    • 8–12 hours of light per day, with a ramp-up and ramp-down period if possible (mimicking sunrise/sunset).

  • Lighting Types:

    • High-quality LEDs, metal halides, or T5HO fluorescent fixtures all work well—just ensure uniform coverage and intensity across the reef.

Water Flow Requirements for Acropora Coral

Acropora corals thrive in strong, turbulent, and random water flow. They rely heavily on flow to deliver nutrients, remove waste, and prevent detritus from settling on their delicate branches.

  • Recommended Flow:
High, irregular flow—aim for at least 30–50 times the tank volume per hour in total circulation.

  • Flow Type:

    • Randomized/turbulent flow is key. Avoid constant, laminar streams.

    • Use wave makers, gyre pumps, or alternating current systems to create dynamic movement.

  • Placement Tips:

    • Place Acropora in areas where they receive strong, indirect flow.

    • Direct blasts from powerheads can cause tissue damage—spread the flow across the colony instead.

Why It Matters:
Proper flow helps with gas exchange, nutrient delivery, and preventing localized algae or bacterial buildup, all of which are vital for a thriving Acro.
