WYSIWYG Barcode Gem Tang

The Barcode Gem Tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum) is an exceptionally rare and visually distinctive variation of the highly sought-after Gem Tang. While traditional Gem Tangs are known for their dense pattern of bright white spots against a deep black body, Barcode Gem Tangs display unusual elongated white markings and broken lines that create a striking “barcode” appearance across portions of the body.

This unique pattern makes each Barcode Gem Tang truly individual. The underlying fish remains a Gem Tang—the barcode appearance is an unusual pattern variation rather than a separate species. With its dramatic black-and-white coloration, bright yellow tail, and one-of-a-kind markings, this is an outstanding collector fish and centerpiece for a large marine aquarium.

What Makes This Fish Special?

The Barcode Gem Tang is distinguished by its highly unusual pattern. Instead of displaying only the small, individual white spots normally associated with a Gem Tang, portions of the pattern develop into elongated dashes, streaks, and irregular horizontal markings.

These markings can resemble the lines of a barcode, giving these specimens their trade name.

Because the pattern varies from fish to fish, a Barcode Gem Tang is particularly well suited to a WYSIWYG listing. The fish shown in this listing is the exact specimen you will receive, allowing you to see its individual pattern, coloration, and markings before purchasing.

Behavior & Husbandry

Gem Tangs are active surgeonfish that require substantial swimming space along with established rockwork for grazing and shelter.

They can become territorial, particularly toward other tangs and fish with a similar body shape. If multiple tangs are kept together, adequate aquarium size, rockwork, visual barriers, and careful introduction are important.

An established aquarium with good water quality, strong circulation, and plenty of natural grazing opportunities is ideal.

Feeding & Diet

Gem Tangs are primarily herbivorous grazers and should receive a diet rich in marine-based algae and vegetable matter.

What We Feed at Lush Corals:

• Nori / dried marine algae
• High-quality herbivore pellets
• Frozen mysis shrimp
• Enriched brine shrimp
• Other high-quality prepared marine foods

In Your Aquarium:

• Offer nori or other marine algae regularly
• Provide high-quality herbivore pellets
• Supplement with frozen marine foods
• Encourage natural grazing on established rockwork

A varied diet with frequent access to marine algae helps maintain healthy body condition, coloration, and long-term health.
