ABOUT OCTOSPAWN CORAL
Octospawn coral, often considered a cross between Frogspawn and Hammer corals, is a stunning LPS coral with thick, fleshy tentacles that branch into multiple tips, giving it a soft, flowing appearance. It's relatively hardy, making it a great showpiece for both beginner and experienced reef keepers. With moderate lighting and flow, Octospawn adds movement, color, and texture to any reef tank.
Lighting Requirements for Octospawn Coral
Octospawn corals thrive under moderate lighting, similar to their Euphyllia cousins (Hammer and Frogspawn).
-
Ideal PAR Range:
100–200 PAR -
100–150 PAR: Great for steady growth and maintaining color.
-
150–200 PAR: Encourages fuller polyp extension and vibrant coloration, especially in well-established tanks.
-
Spectrum:
-
A blue-dominant spectrum (420–470nm) enhances the coral’s fluorescence and visual appeal.
-
Full-spectrum lighting with a mix of blue and white also works well when PAR is kept in check.
-
Lighting Type:
-
Does well under LED, T5HO, or metal halide setups with controlled intensity.
-
Placement Tips:
-
Place Octospawn in mid to lower areas of the tank, depending on the intensity of your light fixture.
Water Flow Requirements for Octospawn Coral
Octospawn corals prefer moderate water flow that is gentle yet steady. They need enough movement to ensure nutrients and oxygen reach their polyps, but too strong of a current can cause stress and retraction.
-
Flow Type:
-
Moderate, indirect flow is ideal.
-
A gentle current helps keep the coral’s surface clean without overwhelming it.
-
Why It Matters:
Proper flow supports healthy polyp extension and prevents debris buildup. Too much flow can cause tissue damage, while too little can hinder their ability to capture food and thrive. -
Placement Tips:
Place the coral in an area where it experiences gentle to moderate flow, such as the middle or lower sections of the tank, away from direct streams.
