ABOUT FAVIA CORAL

Favia corals are hardy, eye-catching large polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their maze-like patterns and vibrant colors. They’re relatively easy to care for, making them a great choice for both beginners and experienced reef keepers. Favia thrive in moderate light and flow, and grow slowly into dome-shaped colonies that add texture and color to any reef tank.

Lighting Requirements for Favia Coral

Favia corals prefer low to moderate lighting, making them a great option for shaded or lower-light areas in the aquarium.

  • Ideal PAR Range:
    50–150 PAR

    • 50–100 PAR: Ideal for promoting color retention and slow, steady growth.

    • 100–150 PAR: Suitable for slightly more exposed areas, but avoid intense, direct light.

  • Spectrum:

    • A blue-dominant spectrum (420–470nm) enhances coloration and overall health.

    • A full-spectrum mix of blue and white also supports growth, as long as intensity is controlled.

  • Lighting Type:

    • Performs well under LEDs, T5HO, or metal halide lights, as long as PAR stays within the safe range.

  • Placement Tips:

    • Best placed in the lower to middle regions of the tank where light is more subdued.

Water Flow Requirements for Favia Coral

Favia corals prefer moderate, indirect water flow. They do best with steady movement that keeps them clean without being too forceful.

  • Flow Type:

    • Moderate, indirect flow is ideal.

    • The current should gently move around the coral, helping remove debris and deliver nutrients without irritating the fleshy polyps.

  • Why It Matters:
Proper flow keeps the coral healthy, encourages polyp extension, and prevents detritus buildup in the ridges of its skeleton. Strong, direct flow can cause tissue damage over time.

  • Placement Tips:

    • Place them in areas of the tank that get gentle to moderate circulation, such as mid to lower zones or off to the sides of powerheads.
