ABOUT LEATHER CORAL
Leather corals are soft corals known for their flexible, leathery texture and wide variety of colors and shapes. They are often prized for their unique, undulating movements in the water. Leather corals are hardy and easy to care for, making them a popular choice for both beginner and experienced reef aquarists. They thrive in moderate lighting and flow, and they can grow into large, attractive colonies over time, adding texture and movement to any reef tank.
Lighting Requirements for Leather Coral
Leather corals thrive under moderate lighting and can tolerate a range of lighting conditions, but they do best with gentle, indirect light.
-
Ideal PAR Range:
50–150 PAR -
50–100 PAR: Ideal for maintaining healthy growth and preventing stress.
-
100–150 PAR: Can be tolerated, but higher light levels should be introduced gradually to avoid potential bleaching.
-
Spectrum:
-
A blue-dominant spectrum (420–470nm) is ideal to enhance their natural colors.
-
Full-spectrum lighting also works well, providing the necessary light for healthy growth and development.
-
Lighting Type:
-
Leather corals do well under LED, T5HO, or metal halide lighting, as long as the intensity is moderated.
-
Placement Tips:
-
Best placed in mid to lower areas of the tank, where light intensity is lower but still adequate for growth.
Water Flow Requirements for Leather Coral
Leather corals prefer gentle to moderate water flow. They thrive in steady currents that help keep their surface clean and allow for proper nutrient uptake.
-
Flow Type:
-
Gentle to moderate, indirect flow is ideal.
-
A soft current helps the coral extend its polyps and maintain its flexible, undulating movement. Avoid strong or direct flow, as it can cause the coral to retract and may lead to stress.
-
Why It Matters:
Proper flow encourages healthy growth, maintains the coral's shape, and prevents debris from accumulating on the coral's surface. -
Placement Tips:
Position the coral in areas with low to moderate flow to support healthy extension and movement without causing stress.
