Quick Facts
- Care Level: Easy
- Temperament: Peaceful (can be territorial with similar-shaped fish)
- Reef Compatibility: Reef Safe
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
- Size: Ranging from approximately 1–3 inches at adult size
Behavior & Husbandry
Royal Grammas naturally inhabit rock crevices and overhangs, where they establish a small territory. In the aquarium, they will choose a cave or shaded area as their home base, darting in and out throughout the day.
They are generally peaceful but may show mild territorial behavior toward similar species such as dottybacks or other basslets, particularly in smaller systems. In well-structured aquascapes with ample rockwork, they integrate very well into community reef environments.
Providing caves, overhangs, and shaded zones will help reduce stress and encourage natural behavior.
Feeding & Diet
Royal Grammas are carnivorous and thrive on a varied, protein-rich diet.
What We Feed at Lush Corals:
- Frozen mysis shrimp
- Enriched brine shrimp
- High-quality pellet foods
In Your Aquarium:
- Frozen mysis and brine
- Small meaty foods
- Pellets and flakes once established
Once conditioned, they are strong, consistent eaters and rarely picky. Feeding 1–2 times daily with a mix of frozen and prepared foods will promote optimal health and coloration.
Compatibility Notes
Royal Grammas are excellent additions to peaceful community tanks and pair well with:
- Clownfish
- Gobies & blennies
- Wrasses
- Tangs (in larger systems)
Avoid combining with aggressive species or similar-shaped territorial fish in smaller aquariums.
