ABOUT CYNARINA CORAL

Cynarina corals, often referred to as Cynarina lacrymalis, are a striking species of LPS corals known for their large, fleshy, disk-shaped bodies and vibrant colors, including shades of green, red, and orange. These corals have a unique, round appearance with a central mouth surrounded by tentacles. Cynarina are relatively easy to care for, making them a popular choice for reef aquariums. They thrive in moderate lighting and flow, and their slow growth rate and colorful appearance make them an attractive addition to any tank.

Lighting Requirements for Cynarina Coral

Cynarina corals prefer moderate lighting. While they can tolerate a range of light intensities, they do best in indirect or low to moderate light conditions, simulating their natural habitat in deeper reef zones.

  • Ideal PAR Range:
    100–200 PAR

    • 100–150 PAR: Ideal for maintaining vibrant coloration and healthy growth.

    • 150–200 PAR: Can be tolerated but should be introduced gradually to prevent light stress or bleaching.

  • Spectrum:

    • A blue-dominant spectrum (420–470nm) enhances the coral's color and promotes healthy growth.

    • Full-spectrum lighting is also effective, providing balanced light exposure.

  • Lighting Type:

    • Cynarina corals do well under LED, T5HO, or metal halide lighting, as long as the light intensity remains moderate.

  • Placement Tips:

    • Place them in mid to lower areas of the tank where light is less intense but still sufficient for growth.

Water Flow Requirements for Cynarina Coral

Cynarina corals prefer gentle to moderate water flow. They are relatively tolerant of different flow rates but do best in areas with soft, indirect currents.

  • Flow Type:

    • Gentle to moderate, indirect flow is ideal.

    • Avoid direct, strong flow as it can cause the coral to retract and stress the tissue.

  • Why It Matters:
Proper flow helps with nutrient uptake, keeps the coral’s surface clean, and supports healthy polyp extension without causing damage.

  • Placement Tips:

Position the coral in an area with gentle to moderate flow, such as near the tank's mid-level or protected areas away from powerful currents.
