ABOUT HAMMER CORAL

Hammer corals are iconic LPS corals, long cherished in the hobby. Native to Pacific reefs, they come in various colors and growth forms, from wall to branching styles. Both types are striking additions to any reef, though the branching variety typically grows faster.

Lighting Requirements for Hammer Coral

Hammer corals prefer moderate lighting but can adapt to varying intensities. Too much light can cause stress, while too little can affect their growth and color.

  • Ideal PAR Range:
    100–250 PAR

    • 100–150 PAR: Ideal for moderate lighting and steady growth.

    • 150–250 PAR: Works well for vibrant colors and healthy extension, but monitor closely to avoid bleaching.

  • Spectrum:

    • A blue-dominant spectrum (420–470nm) enhances the coral’s natural colors and promotes healthy growth.

    • Full-spectrum lighting, with a mix of blue and white, also works well.

  • Lighting Type:

    • Hammer corals thrive under LEDs, T5HO, or metal halide lighting setups, as long as the light intensity remains within the recommended PAR range.

  • Placement Tips:

    • Place them in the mid to lower sections of your tank, depending on your light intensity.

    • Avoid placing them directly under intense lighting to prevent bleaching or stress.

Water Flow Requirements for Hammer Coral

Hammer corals prefer moderate to gentle, indirect water flow. They need just enough movement to keep detritus off their surface and encourage full polyp extension without being blasted by strong currents.

  • Flow Type:

    • Moderate, gentle flow is ideal, allowing the tentacles to sway without being whipped around.

    • Too strong of a flow can cause the coral to retract or get damaged, while too little flow can lead to debris buildup.

  • Why It Matters:
Proper flow helps with nutrient exchange and keeps the coral’s surface clean. It also encourages better polyp extension, making the coral more vibrant.

  • Placement Tips:

    • Position them in areas with gentle, random flow, avoiding direct exposure to powerheads or strong wave makers.

Hammer corals do well in the mid to lower sections of the tank.
