ABOUT ACANTHO CORAL

Acanthophyllia corals, also known as Acantho corals, are large, colorful LPS corals with wide, fleshy polyps and striking patterns. They are known for their unique, mound-like structure and vibrant hues, including shades of red, green, and purple. Acantho corals are relatively easy to care for, thriving in moderate lighting and flow, making them a great addition to reef tanks. Their slow growth and stunning appearance make them a prized piece in any coral collection.

Lighting Requirements for Acanthophyllia Coral

Acanthophyllia corals prefer moderate lighting and can tolerate a range of light intensities, but they do best with gentle light exposure.

  • Ideal PAR Range:
    50–150 PAR

    • 50–100 PAR: Ideal for maintaining vibrant coloration and steady growth.

    • 100–150 PAR: Can be tolerated, but higher light levels should be introduced gradually to avoid stressing the coral.

  • Spectrum:

    • A blue-dominant spectrum (420–470nm) enhances the coral’s colors.

    • Full-spectrum lighting is also suitable, ensuring the coral gets a balanced light source.

  • Lighting Type:

    • Works well under LED, T5HO, or metal halide setups as long as the PAR remains within the recommended range.

  • Placement Tips:

    • Position them in lower to mid sections of the tank, where light intensity is more moderate.

Water Flow Requirements for Acanthophyllia Coral

Acanthophyllia corals prefer gentle to moderate water flow. They do best with a slow, steady current that allows their polyps to extend without being overwhelmed.

  • Flow Type:

    • Gentle to moderate, indirect flow is ideal.

    • A slow-moving current helps keep the coral clean without causing tissue damage from stronger currents.

  • Why It Matters:
Proper flow encourages healthy polyp extension, removes debris, and ensures nutrient exchange without stressing the coral.

  • Placement Tips:

Position Acantho corals in areas of the tank with gentle, diffused flow, such as lower or mid-tank regions, away from direct powerhead streams.
